How we work

The difference between labour supply that helps and labour supply that costs you time is whether the person can be left to work. We send people we already use on our own contracts, and we replace anybody who is not performing without argument.

You can take individuals into your own supervision, or take a crew with our foreman so that the day to day management stays with us. Rates and notice periods are agreed in writing before anybody starts.

Supervised labour, not just bodies on site

Clients come to us for labour when they have a programme to hit and not enough people, or when they need a specific trade for a defined period without adding permanent headcount. What matters in that situation is not the hourly rate but whether the people who turn up can work unsupervised at the standard your project needs, and whether they turn up at all.

Our teams are directly employed and known to us, they arrive with the right tools and personal protective equipment, and they work under our own supervision where you want that included. We can supply by the day, the week or the month, for single trades or mixed teams, and we handle the employment administration, statutory obligations and insurance so those do not become your problem. Where you would rather we simply take the whole package on as a subcontract with a priced scope, we can do that instead.

How the hire actually works

Labour supply fails when it is treated as a headcount transaction. What you are really buying is a person who can be dropped into a live site and be productive on day one, and that only happens if the brief is right at the start. We ask four questions before quoting: what trade and what skill level, what the person will actually be doing, who supervises them on site, and what the site conditions and hours are. A welder on a fabrication bench and a welder working at height on a live commercial roof are different bookings even though the trade name is the same.

From there the mechanics are simple. Rates are quoted daily, weekly or monthly with the hours, overtime treatment and any out-of-hours premium stated up front. Personnel arrive with their own basic tools and PPE unless agreed otherwise, and heavier plant is either supplied by you or quoted separately. Timesheets are signed on site by your representative, so what is invoiced is what was verified. If a placement is not working out, we replace rather than argue about it.

Self-supervised or under your management

Two models cover most requirements. In the first, the operatives work directly under your site management and take instruction from your supervisor - this suits contractors who have the management capacity but not the hands. In the second, we supply a BFC Ltd supervisor with the gang, so you brief one person and receive daily progress rather than managing individuals. The second model costs more per day and almost always costs less per completed task, because the sequencing and the material call-off are handled rather than left to chance.

A worked example: forty-two light fittings in a live building

A useful illustration is a T5 to LED replacement programme we carried out in Quatre Bornes. On paper it reads as a labour task: replace forty-two fittings. In practice the work required bypassing and modifying internal circuitry for LED compatibility on obsolete ballasted fittings, identifying and replacing a non-operational RCD found during the works, and a full distribution board check with re-labelling at the end. Sent in as unsupervised general labour, that job stops the moment the first fitting turns out to be non-standard. Sent in as a supervised electrical gang with a named engineer able to make a decision on site, it finished as one continuous programme with the compliance items closed out at the same time. The lesson is not that labour supply is the wrong instrument; it is that the skill level and the supervision have to match what the work will actually turn into.

Vetting and compliance

Every operative we place has been worked with by us on our own sites, which is a different standard from a name on an agency list. Trade competence is verified in practice, and health and safety expectations are briefed to Mauritian OSHA requirements before mobilisation. On Construction Industry Authority (CIA) registered works our own registrations for civil, MEP and building construction apply to the works we supervise.
