How we work

Electrical work is where shortcuts cost the most, so we test what we install and hand over the results in writing. That matters for insurance, for landlord and tenant obligations, and for anyone who may need to work on the system after us.

Typical jobs range from replacing an overloaded distribution board in an older Quatre Bornes property, to running clean power and data for a new office floor, to tracing an intermittent fault that has defeated somebody else. We work on live commercial sites out of hours where needed.

Standards, testing and paperwork

Almost every electrical problem we are called to in Mauritius comes down to one of four things: undersized or ageing cable, poor terminations that have loosened with heat, missing or defeated earthing and bonding, or a distribution board that has been extended so many times that nobody knows what feeds what. We start by establishing what is actually there — supply type, whether the incoming is single or three-phase from the CEB, the state of the earth arrangement, and how the board is loaded — before quoting anything.

Storms here make surge protection worth the small extra cost, particularly for lift controllers, pumps, air-conditioning inverters and IT equipment. On completion we label the board properly, record circuit details, and hand over test results so the next person who opens that board is not guessing.

A worked example: an LED upgrade that turned into a compliance job

A commercial client in Quatre Bornes asked us to replace forty-two T5 fittings with LED. Described that way it is a swap. What we actually found on site was a set of obsolete ballasted fittings whose internal circuitry had to be bypassed and modified for LED compatibility, a non-operational RCD that had been sitting dead in the distribution board, and a board with no reliable labelling. The scope delivered was therefore: forty-two fittings replaced with modern LED, internal circuitry bypassed and modified, the failed RCD identified and replaced, and a full distribution board check and re-labelling.

Two points are worth drawing out. First, the RCD is the part that mattered most and nobody had asked for it, because nobody knew. An RCD that does not trip is not a fault you notice until it is the only thing standing between a person and an earth fault. Second, doing the fitting replacement without correcting the circuitry would have produced flicker, premature driver failure and a warranty argument within months. The cheapest version of that job was the one that dealt with all three things in one visit.

Testing, certification and records

Electrical work that is not tested is not finished. On installation and remedial work we carry out continuity and polarity verification, insulation resistance testing, earth fault loop impedance measurement and RCD operation and trip time testing, then record the circuit schedule and label the board so the next person can work on it safely. Where a client needs documentation for an insurer, a landlord or an internal audit, the test results and photographs are issued as part of handover. On maintenance contracts we repeat RCD testing and board inspection annually and record the trend, because a slowly deteriorating connection is visible in the record long before it is visible in the building.

The faults we see most often in Mauritius

Overloaded and unlabelled distribution boards where circuits have been added over the years without records. Loose terminations at boards and socket outlets, which run hot and eventually fail as a burnt terminal rather than a tripped breaker. Corroded external fittings and junction boxes on coastal sites, where salt attacks the enclosure long before the cable. Undersized or shared circuits feeding modern IT and cooling loads that were never in the original design. Missing or non-functional RCD protection on circuits that legally need it. And nuisance tripping that is usually not a fault in the breaker but accumulated earth leakage across several appliances, which needs measurement rather than replacement.

How we work on live premises

Most of our electrical work is carried out in buildings that cannot simply be switched off. Isolations are planned and agreed in writing, temporary supplies are provided where a circuit must stay live, works that require a shutdown are programmed out of hours, and every isolation is proved dead and locked off before work starts. Where the building is occupied, dust and access protection is set up before the first fitting is opened.
