How we work

Coastal and humid conditions are hard on steel, so preparation and coating matter as much as the welding. We specify the treatment to suit the exposure of the location rather than applying the same paint system everywhere.

Joinery is measured on site and made to fit, which avoids the packers and filler strips that give away off the shelf units. We can match existing timber and finishes when extending or repairing earlier work.

Choosing materials that last here

Metalwork and joinery are where the climate is least forgiving. Mild steel with a decorative coating will bleed rust at every fixing within a couple of years near the coast, and softwood that is fine in Europe will not survive our humidity and termites. We therefore steer clients towards galvanised or properly primed and coated steel, stainless fixings where the exposure justifies them, aluminium for coastal balustrades and screens, and hardwood or treated timber for anything structural outdoors.

Detailing matters as much as material choice. Fixings should not trap water, end grain needs sealing, decks need airflow beneath them, and gates and doors need to be built with enough clearance to keep working when timber moves in the wet season. We fabricate and install gates, railings, balustrades, staircases, canopies, grilles, doors, shelving and fitted furniture, and we make the choice between a workshop item and an on-site build based on which gives the better finish.

A worked example: an emergency gate repair at Galerie Evershine

An emergency call-out at commercial premises in Rose Hill shows how metalwork usually reaches us: not as a design project but as a safety problem. The gates at Galerie Evershine had deteriorated to the point where hinges were heavily rusted, panels had collapsed and there was structural damage, which together created both a safety risk to the public and a security risk to the tenants. Replacement was the obvious answer and the wrong one, because the lead time on new gates would have left the premises exposed for weeks.

What we did instead was assess on site, replace the hinges with welding works to sound steel, rehang and realign the gates so they ran and latched correctly, then carry out a safety check and hand over. The premises were secure the same day. That is the judgement call worth paying for in metalwork: knowing when a repair restores full function and when it is only postponing a replacement. We say which one it is in writing before starting.

Fabrication and installation in one contract

Steel and timber elements are made to the measurements of the opening rather than to a catalogue. We survey, take real dimensions, fabricate and then install, which removes the familiar problem of a gate or a balustrade that was made correctly and does not fit. Typical steel work includes gates and railings, security grilles, canopies and shade structures, staircases and balustrades, frames, brackets and supports for plant, and steel cable balustrade systems - we replaced one as part of a commercial package at Ebene Junction, alongside a four-leaf sliding aluminium riser door. On the timber side we make and install slat partitions, wall panelling, headboards and platform beds, kitchen carcasses and worktop installations, storage walls, shelving, pergolas and gazebos, and decking.

Corrosion protection is the whole job in Mauritius

Fabrication quality is quickly irrelevant if the protection is wrong. Within a few kilometres of the coast, untreated or poorly prepared steel will bleed rust through paint within a season, and the failure usually starts at the weld and the fixing rather than in the middle of a section. Our standard approach is proper surface preparation before any coating, treatment of welds and cut edges specifically, a primer suited to the exposure, and stainless or galvanised fixings where the element is external. For hardwood we specify species appropriate to exposure, then sand, seal and finish, with a maintenance interval stated at handover - external timber in this climate is a maintained item, not a fit-and-forget one.

Working in occupied and public places

Hot works in a live building need planning rather than improvisation. We agree the working window, set up screening and fire watch, protect finishes and public routes, and where the element is a security item we sequence the work so the premises are never left open overnight. On public frontages the safety check and sign-off is part of the handover rather than an afterthought.
